Ready to roll out your new modern aesthetic?
Prepare to clear the clutter. Before you can fully go minimal, you have to clear the space.
And for most of us that means decluttering.
Second-Hand Modern

Looking for the best places to shop for bargains on hip and modern furniture and accessories?
Historically the nearby markets of Kansas City, Denver or Dallas have been much more active for modern and retro shoppers. For many years sellers in Tulsa and Oklahoma City traveled or sought out buyers through online marketplaces like Craigslist or eBay. But today the local demand for cool swag is heating up.
We spent a week traveling the Sooner State to find the second-hand shops that specialize in vintage, retro, modern and contemporary items. We discovered shops offering everything from kitsch to Case Study. But the most exciting discovery was the community of businesses making a go and keeping it local. Savvy entrepreneurs are staying close to home, setting up shop– even rejuvenating retail storefronts and neighborhoods. The end result is a shopper's paradise. If you know where to look.

Recycled Plant Stand
We've had this plant stand sitting around for years. It was one of those multi-tiered, folding jobs made from wood- very Seventies. Like the brochure might have had a macramé owl hanging on the wall behind it.

Favorites: Modern Design Stamps
Cool stamps are not always easy to find.
I mean, you could always create and print your own photo stamps. But if you just want to drop by the post office and buy some cool stamps- well, you'll usually be disappointed. That is until now!
On Wednesday the USPS unveiled a new series of stamps honoring 12 giants of industrial design. The Pioneers of American Industrial Design series includes influential designers like Henry Dreyfuss, Norman Bel Geddes and Raymond Loewy. Even the border of the stamp pane (or selvage as it's known in philatelic circles) is adorned with the classic Airflow house fan- as seen in the recent American Streamlined exhibit at Tulsa's Philbrook Museum!
Each stamp features the name of a designer and a photograph of an object they created, as well as a description and year the object was created.
To learn more than you ever wanted to know about stamp collecting (including what "selvage" means) visit our featured favorite, Beyond the Perf. The official site for USA stamp collecting developed to bring you in-depth information about stamps, cancellations, and related events.

McModern
Weary travelers making a pit stop on the Muskogee Turnpike may think they've stumbled into a W Hotel. Alas, it's only a McDonalds.
As a child these travel plazas held a science fiction-like fascination. Gaudy signs and futuristic architecture invited you into a world of tomorrow. The best part of any road trip was the rest stop. Like an oasis on the endless ribbon of concrete, the travel plaza provided a much needed break from the monotony of transcontinental travel by car.
The new 15,000 square foot travel plaza, located in Wagoner County, replaced the existing convenience store and Mickey D from the Seventies. Both businesses are now located in one building which opened in April 2011. The decor is open and contemporary, what I'd describe as West Elm-ish. We especially liked the bright red Emeco 111 Navy chairs
molded from recycled Coke bottles. Even the toilets are hip, featuring sleek waterless urinals and Dyson Airblade hand dryers
.
Another nice touch is the artwork in the center of the restaurant. Four photos of Oklahoma scenes by Muskogee dentist David Jones are displayed on segmented panels. It's a nice touch that adds some local color.
It's no world of tomorrow. But it's nice to see a little effort spent on making it special.

Unica Home: Outlet Offers Modern on the Cheap
With the recent Snowpocalypse we found ourselves with plenty of time on our hands.
Fortunately we had Internet access and the power never went out. Seemed like the perfect time to surf some of my favorite websites! That includes a shop called Unica Home.
I had the pleasure of visiting Unica a few years ago during a business trip to Las Vegas. I had some time to kill and decided to drop in and see their store. They have tons of cool modern gadgets and furnishings- famous name stuff like Alessi, Chilewich, Blomus, Heller, Fornasetti, Hario and such.
The big news I just discovered was their new eBay Store! This is their online outlet that offers closeouts, discontinued items, one-offs and floor samples. Mod and cheap! What could be better? Check it out at stores.ebay.com/unicahome-outlet, and tell `em OK Modern sent you!

George Nelson Exhibit at the OKCMOA
George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher
February 3 through May 8, 2011
Oklahoma City Museum of Art
George Nelson is probably best known for his modern lighting and furniture designs. His bubble lamps are an icon of Mid-Century Modern design, and today are considered a requirement on the set of any trendy video shoot.
But Nelson's influence reached well beyond home furnishings.

His talent as a writer, educator and architect was well known before he became an accomplished industrial designer. In fact, when he became the Director of Design for the Herman Miller Company in 1945 he had not designed a single piece of furniture. But fortunately for us, that was not the case for long!
The exhibition features works by Nelson organized into three categories- home, office and literature.
